My Role

Over more than six years, I worked across the CoolAutomation product ecosystem, designing new features and evolving existing workflows across desktop and mobile products.

My work included UX research, information architecture, complex system flows, wireframes, UI design, prototyping, design-system development, collaboration with product and development teams, and QA throughout implementation.

Challenge

Challenge

HVAC management involves complex relationships between organizations, sites, systems, devices, parameters, alerts, and controls.

The main design challenge was turning highly technical infrastructure into workflows that feel clear and manageable for both professional users and everyday end users.

Designing for Complex Systems

  1. Multi-Level System Architecture

The platform supports multiple companies, sites, HVAC systems, and individual units. The information architecture was designed to help users move easily between high-level monitoring and detailed device control.

  2. Monitoring & System Status

Dashboards bring together operational data, alerts, connectivity, temperatures, and system states, helping users quickly understand what is happening across large installations.

  3. Remote Control

Core HVAC controls were simplified into clear interaction patterns for adjusting temperature, operating modes, fan settings, schedules, and individual units remotely.

Extending Control to Mobile

The mobile application was designed as a dedicated experience for remote HVAC control, complementing the desktop platform while addressing the needs of users on the go.

Complex system information and controls were adapted for a smaller screen, allowing users to monitor unit status, identify errors, adjust settings, and manage individual areas remotely.

Simplifying Complex Workflows

Complex HVAC tasks often involve multiple parameters, dependencies, and technical decisions. The goal was to break these processes into clear, manageable steps while keeping users informed about what they were configuring.

Scheduling

The scheduling flow was designed to simplify recurring HVAC automation across different days, times, and system actions.

A step-by-step structure helps users create, review, and edit schedules without having to manage all settings at once.

Extending Control to Mobile

Multi-step configuration flows guide installers through technical setup while providing clear feedback, parameter validation, and system status throughout the process.

Building a Scalable Design System

Building a Scalable Design System

Working across the CoolAutomation ecosystem required maintaining consistency across different products, platforms, and increasingly complex workflows. A shared design system established reusable components, interaction patterns, states, and responsive behaviors across desktop and mobile experiences.
